Nikki Clan is a Mexican pop/rock band from Nogales, Sonora and Mexicali, Baja California, formed in 2005, by producer Abelardo Vázquez. The band is fronted by Yadira Gianola (vocals), with Alberto Espinosa (bass), José Antonio Dabdoub (guitar), Ángel Yáñez (guitar), and José Carlos Fausto Monroy (drums). The band’s name is taken from Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx, who is one of Yadira’s idols. However, Nikki Clan sounds nothing like Mötley Crüe. Yadira’s other idols include “Aerosmith … Bon Jovi, No Doubt, Sublime, Green Day, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Blink 182, Oasis and U2.” Obviously, she’s a rock loving chick. But, she’s also super sexy, too. Yadira did an awesome photo shoot for the Spanish version of Maxim in 2007. Oh, by the way, she sings entirely in Spanish. ¿Entiendes, Méndez?
Nikki Clan‘s self-titled debut, was released in 2006, and was filled, apparently, with covers of songs originally in English that I don’t know. But, regardless, this album is a pretty awesome collection of addictive, sometimes hard rocking pop/rock, every track with a killer hook. “Mirame,” the first single, opens the album with a perfect balance of pop and rock. Listen. No, watch! The last track, “Que Más Da,” is even better, but has no video. This song sounds like Daughtry if Chris Daughtry were a Mexican girl who sings in Spanish, and it wouldn’t be out of place on Daughtry‘s 2nd album, “Leave This Town.” In between, there are 10 more excellent tracks to choose favorites from. I like the pop/rockers “Corazón Abierto” and “Dímelo A Mí,” but “Dame Un Dia Más” is a pretty awesome mid-tempo ballad with a hook that will be stuck in your head for days. The “Reedición” version (pictured), released a year later, includes the cool song “Niñas Mal” which, apparently, was used in a Mexican movie of the same name. Watch some videos here:
Nikki Clan followed up, in 2008, with their 2nd album, “No Será Igual,” also filled with covers of songs I don’t know. But, “Yo No Te Puedo Olvidar” sounds very familiar. This album serves up more hooky rockin’ pop, with additional vocal input from one of the guys. Not sure which. “Ya No Tengas Miedo” and “Te Quiero Tanto” are duets, but both are pretty good. The first single “Las Curvas de Esa Chica” is definitely a cool track, a punky sleaze rocker of sorts with more guy vocals. “Esta Noche Te Voy a Besar” and “Sólo Para Mí” are my favorite up-tempo rockers, while “Después de Todo” is another good mid-tempo ballad, as are “No Sabes Dar Amor” and “Pensando en Tí.” The first release, apparently, was part of a five-album deal with Sony BMG, but it’s been five years since this second album was released.
