Barbe-Q-Barbies is a five-piece hard rock band from Helsinki, Finland, formed in 2002. The band consists of Niki (vocals), Ekkis (guitar), Kaisa (guitar), Minttu (bass) and Niina (drums). Bam Margera (of MTV‘s Jackass and Viva la Bam) said: “Probably the best all-girl rock band ever!” But, that is definitely an overblown declaration. Jussi 69 (of Finnish rock band The 69 Eyes) said: “Loud. Proud. Dirty rock. I’m in heaven!” Much better. The band themselves cite AC/DC, Kiss and Motorhead as their inspirations. I get that. But, the AC/DC influence is the most obvious. Sure, AC/DC fans are driven by testosterone, and estrogen just stalls them, but these girls rock!
Barbe-Q-Barbies‘ debut, All Over You (2010), was an energetic blast of classic hard rock. “Spell” and “Twisted Little Sister” are awesome AC/DC-ish tracks, but the title track, “Rockstar” and “Don’t Look At Me” are the most AC/DC-ish. But, the least AC/DC-ish tracks, like “My Salvation” “Rock ‘n’ Roll” and, especially, the very Runaways-like “Aggression” are my favorites on this album. The band even mixes it up with a cool cover of Sweet‘s “Wig-Wam Bam.”

Barbe-Q-Barbies‘ second album, Breaking All The Rules (2013), is an even bigger blast. The AC/DC influence is still there, but hidden deeper in this fresh set of addictive, riff-heavy hard rockers. “Shut the fuck up and dance, dance!” Niki demands in “STFU,” and it’s good advice. My favorites are “Whole Lotta You,” “Love Machine” and “Can’t Get What You’re Looking For,” but all are worth listening to. However, “Gun In My Hand,” an acoustic ballad, would have been better placed at the end.
