Allison Iraheta

AllisonIraheta-01CAllison Iraheta is an American pop/rock singer from Los Angeles, California. She is best known for finishing in 4th place on the 8th season of American Idol in 2009. She competed in the same season as Adam Lambert and winner Kris Allen. Iraheta was only 16 years old when she appeared on American Idol, but her raspy,AllisonIraheta-02 passionate voice belied her age and made performances of songs like “I Can’t Make You Love Me” (Bonnie Raitt) and “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing” (Aerosmith) heartbreakingly beautiful. And, she rocked out, too, on “Slow Ride” (Foghat) which she performed as a duet with Adam Lambert. Before Idol, Iraheta, who is of Salvadoran descent, won the singing competition Quinceañera: Mamá Quiero Ser Artista on Telemundo TV. After Idol, she performed in the American Idols LIVE! Tour 2009, released an excellent but ultimately unsuccessful album, Just Like You (2009), and opened for Lambert on his 2010 GlamNation Tour. Currently, Allison Iraheta is the lead singer of her own band, Halo Circus, with producer Matthew Hager (bass), David Immerman (guitar) and Valerie Franco (drums).

So, Just Like You (2009). I don’t care what you think of me, I love this album. Well, most of it. On this album, Iraheta covers Rock Star: Supernova alum Dilana‘s song “Holiday”, and she does it amazingly well. And, with Iraheta’s raspy voice and her scarlet hair, she kind of comes off as a younger version of Dilana. So, skip the first track, “Friday I’ll Be Over U”, the first single. AllisonIraheta-03 And, skip the Gary Glitter-sampled second track, “Robot Love”, too. Dumb. OK, the rest of this album is infectious pop/rock fueled by Iraheta’s passionate vocals. Sure, it’s mainstream, and more pop than rock, but so what. I like what I like. Most of the songs were written by professional songwriters so, lyrically, they’re pretty bland, but Iraheta’s vocals give them some depth. On “Scars”, the second single, Iraheta sounds a little like Pink. And, Pink, in fact, co-wrote “No One Else” with Kara DioGuardi. The third single, “Don’t Waste the Pretty” features guitar virtuoso Orianthi. I love Orianthi‘s solo work, by the way. “Still Breathing” should have been a hit, even though lyrics like “I would rather rest in peace / Please do not resuscitate” are pretty dumb. “Pieces”, “Trouble Is”, “Just Like You” and “You Don’t Know Me” are all good tracks if you just listen and don’t think. Finally, “Don’t Wanna Be Wrong”, an iTunes bonus track, was co-written by Chris Daughtry. Yeah, I like Daughtry, too.
